Cuban style
The Cubans dance salsa in an incredibly expressive and creative way. The emphasis is on having fun, dancing with you and to bringing the music alive with every part of their body. They look you in the eye, and connect with you as they dance and are particularly generous when it comes to dancing with anyone from abroad. They have the technology to make you feel a million dollars on the dance floor, and they do!!
The Salsa lessons
The lessons start with the whole group together doing a warm up and working on dance technique. Each day it is lead by Kerry and one of the star teachers from the group, The Cuban dance team includes 6 teachers and depending on the group size 8-12 assistants.
We always equal up the male-female ratio
All the Cubans are exceptional dancers with lots of energy and years of experience of working as a team with Kerry. The classes are well structured and you will have a chance to work with all of the teachers at some point. It is important that you feel confident and happy with the group you work with and that you are working at your level.
After the warm up we then work at different levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced depending on the size of the group. There are teachers and assistants working with each group. At the end of the session we come together for a funky warm down. The classes are 3 hours in total with breaks and the rooms are either air conditioned or fanned by sea breezes.
The KEY2CUBA dance programme includes all of the following:
- Accurate footwork
- Understanding all of the different rhythms and on which beats to dance/break or emphasise
- All levels of the Casino Salsa moves, which have names. We teach you all the Spanish names of the moves so that you can remember them easily when dancing with a partner and then dance with everyone when they are called out during Rueda (This is the Cuban wheel)
- Partner technique on how to lead and follow effortlessly
The fluid body movement and particular techniques that really extend your range of movement
- SALSA, SON, RUEDA, RUMBA and AFRO-CUBAN dance styles
- Depending on how busy we are in Havana, there may also be a free extra classes in Body work and in Body movement so if you would like to leave Cuba with a Latin pelvis! dancing Templeque al lo Cubano (i.e. SHAKING YOUR BOOTIE) then these classes will definitely enhance your style. Kerry is a qualified Hellerwork practitioner and this influences the bodywork content. If you are interested in postural awareness and creating more balance and fluidity in your body see www.hellerworkeurope.com for more details
- Personal coaching and attention
This is a 21 hour salsa course. The classes in Havana last three hours and in Cienfuegos they last two hours. You will be spoilt both in class and with hours of practice on the dance floor, in the afternoons and evenings, dancing with the cream of Cuba's top dancers. The most famous dancers in CUBA.... PAULITO AND FREDDY, the dancers who performed with Carlos Manuel y su Clan, are now part of the team and drop in to show us the latest moves and grooves. This course is designed to really increase your confidence, develop your style, technique and to have a lot of fun. At the end of the course there will be a thank you presentation, after which we will hit the salsa matinee to celebrate.
